Unraveling the Ankh: When Alchemy Meets Art

Original Collage + Digital Art by M.-L. Stranger: Feelings (2023)

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, what's that symbol from afar?

Deep in the cobwebbed corridors of ancient Egyptian crypts, amidst the gleam of golden artifacts and the whispers of mummies, lies the Ankh - a symbol draped in mystery and magic. To the untrained eye, it may look like a fancy cross with a loop. To the curious soul, it's a rabbit hole of mysticism and alchemy. And if you're lucky, you might just spot this mesmerizing symbol hiding in plain sight in a modern-day art piece.

What is the Ankh?

While your grandma might mistake it for a snazzy new-age keychain, the Ankh is actually one of the oldest symbols known to humanity. It's a hieroglyph that translates to "life," representing both physical and eternal life. Imagine having the secret to life dangling from a pharaoh's necklace, pretty cool, huh?

Ankh and Alchemy: A Love Story

Beyond the sands of Egypt, the Ankh has found its way into the world of alchemy. Alchemists, who might be described as the mad scientists of the yesteryears, were intrigued by the Ankh’s representation of life and its feminine oval (the loop) meeting the masculine T-shape. Some say it’s a symbol of the union of opposites; others believe it holds the secret recipe to turning ordinary metals into gold! Talk about a magical makeover!

The Ankh Today: Mysticism in Modern Art

But how did this ancient relic find its way into contemporary art? The answer: artists like me. With a penchant for blending the esoteric with the ethereal, my collages are a kaleidoscope of symbols – from aliens to, you guessed it, the Ankh. Each artwork is a universe waiting to be explored, an enigma waiting to be understood.

If you're thinking, “Why Ankh? Why not a cute cat hieroglyph?” Well, the Ankh is more than just a symbol; it's a conversation starter. It whispers tales of forgotten pharaohs, sings of secret alchemical potions, and winks at the world of mysticism. And what’s more mystic than aliens, right?
